The Catcher in the Rye iMovie Project Requirements
• Find and collect the following items for each of your chosen soundtrack songs
o A file of the song if possible (you can burn your songs to a CD at home if you own them, and then bring in this CD to import your song files)
o A minimum of three images/photographs for each of your songs
o A minimum of two quoted song lyrics from your song (you will add this text to your images in the project itself)
• In addition to the previous items, your iMovie project must also include:
o Title screens that include the Artist, Song Title, and Connection (Holden, Event, or Theme).
and Title screens that include two separate lines of lyrics for each song
o At least two Transitions
(You will learn what all of these items are as we work through the project, so don’t worry if you don’t know what a “Transition” or “Title screen” is yet)
BASIC DIRECTIONS FOR iMOVIE PROJECT (we will stop at many of these steps so I can show you more, but here are the basic steps):
1) View the project requirements listed above on the wiki
2) View the example project that I created so you have an idea of one end goal for this project; consider the project requirements you just read
3) Log in to your Home folder and create a New Folder. Title this folder CatcherMovie_lastnamefirstinitial
4) Go to Google Images or another online image search and search for images to correspond to each of your three song choices. These could be directly or symbolically related--it's up to you. Make sure that when you save an image you do a File-->Save Image As-->Save in your Catcher project folder.
5) Open up iMovie and take a basic overview of the program's layout
6) Drag your image files into iMovie and look at some of the program's basic editing features
7) (If you have your song files) Overview on how to import and edit song files
REMINDER: MAKE SURE YOU MEET ALL OF THE PROJECT REQUIREMENTS AS LISTED ABOVE
NOTE: ALWAYS BE SURE TO Share-->Export Movie-->Medium Size-->Title the project about 5 to 10 minutes before the end of the period so you don't lose your work.

Assignment: Example Paragraph
NOTE: Your three paragraphs are due, typed and printed, this Friday 5/8/09
EXAMPLE: The Killers’ “Mr. Brightside” for Chapter 7, Holden thinking about Jane and Stradlater
The Killers’ song “Mr. Brightside” is a perfect representation of Holden’s anxiety over Jane and Stradlater’s date as he thinks about it during Chapter 7 [CLAIM]. Consider, for example, the beginning of the song: “It started out with a kiss / How did it end up like this? / It was only a kiss, it was only a kiss” [DATA]. One could see these words running through Holden’s head as he lies in Ely’s bed worrying about what did or did not happen during the date. To add to Holden’s anxiety over this event, consider that he admits he and Jane never actually kissed, so the prospect of Stradlater getting this chance upsets him even more [WARRANT]. Later in the song, the lines, “Now they’re going to bed / And my stomach is sick / But it’s all in my head” represent Holden’s physical state [DATA]. It’s clear that Holden’s emotions are negatively affecting his physical health [WARRANT]. If Holden could only realize that this negativity is “all in [his] head” , he would likely be a happier, worry-free person.
EXAMPLE: Boys’ Night Out’s “Get Your Head Straight” for Holden
Boys’ Night Out’s song “Get Your Head Straight” sounds like it could have been written specifically for Holden. The opening lines (and chorus), “Get your head straight before it’s too late / Get your head straight and find a better way”, seem like a direct call to Holden to take control of his life before he ends up doing something dangerous or even deadly. These lines echo Mr. Antolini’s words to Holden near the end of the book when he tells him: “I have a feeling that you’re riding for some kind of terrible, terrible fall.” The song continues, “There are dark nights, and there are hard rides / There are a million things to think about when you give up getting high”; these lines capture the turbulent emotions that Holden goes through as he shifts through emotional highs and lows, but it also addresses Holden’s experimentation with cigarettes and alcohol. Holden tends to turn towards drinking, smoking, or thoughts of either when he is depressed—a dangerous pattern that is unfortunately a common vice for too many people. The song closes with the lines, “This year goes out to metamorphosis / There’s gotta be a better way to begin to get some more from this / The problem is, I don’t know what it is”. These lines point to the change, the “metamorphosis”, that Holden and all people undergo throughout life. Finally, the final two lines call out the unfortunate truth that Holden is struggling with his loneliness but doesn’t know how to change it and “get his head straight”.
NOTE: Remember to phrase each paragraph in the claim/data/warrant format. Include at least two pieces of data (your song lyrics) and your warrant for each quote in each paragraph; paragraphs should thus be a minimum of about seven sentences. Another way of looking at it is that each paragraph should be structured as follows:
I. Claim (1-2 sentences)
II. Data #1 (1 quote from song)
III. Warrant for #1 (1-2 sentences explaining how Data #1 supports Claim)
IV. Data #2 (1 more quote from song to support Claim)
V. Warrant for #2 (1-2 sentences explaining how Data #2 supports Claim)
